Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell scheduled a key procedural vote for 10 p.m. Friday to avert a shutdown prior to the midnight deadline.
Trump tweeted after the Schumer meeting: "Excellent preliminary meeting in Oval with @SenSchumer - working on solutions for Security and our great Military together with @SenateMajLdr McConnell and @SpeakerRyan. Making progress - four week extension would be best!"
Hudson Valley Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-Cold Spring) said he will not be paid if a government shutdown occurs.
Maloney sent a letter to House Chief Administrative Officer Philip Kiko asking for his paycheck to be withheld if the government shuts down at midnight.
"Do your job or don’t get paid – that’s a rule everyone outside of Washington lives by, and it should apply to me and my colleagues as well,” said Rep. Maloney. “If Congress doesn’t pass a budget, they shouldn’t be paid. Simple as that.”
The House of Representatives recently passed a short-term spending bill but it must still be approved by the Senate.
Maloney has previously sponsored legislation to withhold congressional pay if the government shuts down.
